Variegation occurs when
some part of a leaf displays a different color than the
base color i.e. which covers 60% or more of the leaf
surface. In hostas there are three typical types of
variegation. & Marginal variegation occurs at the edge of
the leaf blade while & Medial or medio variegation
displays in the middle of the leaf. The width of these
types of variegation may vary considerably. The third
type is & Streaked or splashed variegation where the
different color is spread in small speckles in the leaf
blade. This type is most "unstable" meaning that
& Streaked plants will often revert to solid color or to
& Marginal or & Medial variegation. |
