This cultivar of unidentified parentage was originated in Japan and registered by Peter Ruh of Ohio in 2002 and re-registered with new data in 2010 and again in 2018. It is a miniature to small size plant (6.5 inches high by 7.5 inches wide) with green foliage that has a narrow, mottled yellow marginal variegation.

The leaves are ovate, deeply wavy, moderately cupped, slightly twisted and dull on top. Fragrant, lavender flowers with purple stripes bloom on scapes 6 to 12 inches tall in September.

The registration materials state: "...small marginally variegated clump; piecrust edge...obtained from Gotemba Nursery..."

Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled, A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term yama as mountain and the term fukurin as margined or edged.

This cultivar was previously thought to be a sport of H. 'Tosayama' but this was changed in the 2018 re-registration to Parentage Unknown.

"2002 Registration: H. ‘Fukurin Toso Yama’ This name was registered incorrectly. It should have been registered as H. ‘Fukurin Tosayama’."
