Cutworms often feed at
the base of plants, however, the variegated cutworm
which feeds on hosta leaves will climb up into the
"canopy". They create holes of varying sizes in the leaf
blade from their feeding which occurs at night. There
may be several generations each growing season.
Although not usually a large problem in most hosta
gardens, cutworms may be managed in several ways. During
the day, the 1/2 to 3/4 inch long creatures hide in the
soil at the base of the plant. Scraping the soil with
your fingers may help you discover them. Or, at night,
with a flashlight, you may be able to find them feeding
and dispatch them in a cup of soapy water. In the very
rare case where damage is severe, check with your
Cooperative Extension Service for pesticide
recommendations in your state.
